Mitch Dunn Interview: Ad Agency Wiz turns into Pickleball Entrepreneur

Diana Landau | March 11, 2025

Mitch DunnThis episode is about successfully reinventing yourself in your 50's AND building a huge pickleball community. What's not to love about that? Carl interviews Brand Developer and Pickleball Fanatic Mitch Dunn, who left the big ad agency life he'd been living for almost 30 years to pivot to the wide world of Pickleball. Mitch is now the co-owner of one of the largest dedicated indoor pickleball facilities in the country, with over 1,000 members.

Mitch grew up in Louisville, KY, the youngest of five siblings. Due to the age difference, he says he spent a lot of time alone. "I learned creative problem-solving at an early age because of that," he tells us. His love of creative expression stayed with him through high school, college and into his careers.

After graduating from Xavier University, he started with the legendary Leo Burnett Agency. "Boy did I learn a lot about media and brand strategy!" Mitch worked in the big agency biz for almost 30 years, working on all kinds of brands from Fruit of the Loom to Dewar's. In 2019, Mitch became intrigued with and then deeply passionate about pickleball. In 2020 as a side hustle, he launched one of the fastest -growing community clubs in the country, the Cincinnati Pickleball Club. His non-profit, all- volunteer organization eventually led him to the business side of pickleball.

He was a Senior Vice President at Empower when one day he was "uninvited" to stay at the agency and pivoted quickly to becoming a first time entrepreneur. "This part of my second stage of life is being focused on a brand that I created myself!" he says. He is now co-founder of the Pickle Lodge, one of the best places to play in the Midwest.

Mitch and his wife love Cincinnati. "I've never been happier in my entire career than I am right now. I get to make people happy every day. I get to help them have fun and I connect them to other humans. I feel like a kid. I'm 55 but I feel 25 years old."

Mitch's Tips on (un)retirement and becoming an entrepreneur in mid-life:
  • "I'm glad I have the life lessons and career lessons to use now."
  • "I'm a big believer in 'What if .....?' thinking. Go through the process of asking yes, and....? When you do that, you can come up with a really cool proposition."
  • "I really encourage others to embrace pushing through the fear of becoming a late-stage entrepreneur. It's never been easier to start a business right now. You can publish content to communicate about your business. You can shoot videos about your business. You can start a podcast about your business. Those are important tools regardless of what your business is."

50+ Community -- Pro or Con?

Carl Landau | March 11, 2025
The Carl DiaryI've always been pretty negative about living in a 50+ community. I'm not sure exactly sure why. I think to me it meant that I'm officially old. Why would I want to be surrounded by a bunch of old people?

I think the first time I ever heard about an "active" 50+ community was way back in the late 1990's, when negative headlines about The Villages in Florida came out. It was about all these old people running around having STDs. They drove around in golf carts everywhere. And they had political shouting matches with each other. I remember late night comedians having a field day at these people's expense.

The fact of the matter is that I personally have visited some friends in an active adult community for a grand total of ONE TIME. They seemed really happy with their community. Most recently, a good friend of mine invited me to play pickleball at his brand new 50+ community that just opened. It was incredibly nice! The club house was like like being in a fancy club or spa. The pickleball courts were amazing. My friend told me there's a fun activity on the calendar almost every night. The average age so far for this new community is early 60's. Huh! Half the people living there still work. Every person I met was friendly. There was a real sense of community there.

I checked with my financial advisor, who has a lot of clients in these communities and he said that in general, the properties are a good value. Plus his clients really like living in them. So I wonder why I've been so negative? Did I feel superior because I don't need everything provided for me? I have had my eyes opened and my opinion is now totally turned around. Today's 50+ communities have come a long way since Del Webb started building in the 50's.

I'm not sure if I'll ever live in one of these communities or not. But I learned not to be so judgemental about it all.

What are your thoughts about 50+ communities?

Rebecca Davis Interview: Co-Creator of "Join or Die"

Diana Landau | February 11, 2025

Rebecca DavisThis month's episode is a unique one. Carl interviews filmmaker Rebecca Davis about her new, award-winning documentary, "Join or Die." She is a director and producer of short and long-form documentaries and was previously a senior producer with NBC News for nearly a decade. Though Rebecca is not near retirement, her movie sheds light on how the "(un)retired" can create community in a time when the isolation of the internet and cell phones can absorb much of their daily lives. The movie explores how joining clubs and organizations, in addition to engaging in intergenerational exchanges and mentorship can actually serve to strengthen our society.  "Join or Die" is now on Netflix. (Spoiler Alert! Carl is a huge fan of the movie and its message.)

Rebecca grew up in a middle-class family in Virginia, near Washington D.C. "My brother and I felt lucky to grow up there, as we were exposed to lots of different perspectives," she says. She was also inspired by her father, an anthropologist with a curious eye on the world and community life. In high school, Rebecca worked on the school newspaper with dreams of becoming a journalist and photographer. She tells us that after college and the advent of the digital age, she found a way into video format from journalism and photography, "as a way to do storytelling and explore the narrative more."

Rebecca began working on "Join or Die" when she was still a full-time media producer, working on the film on weekends. It was her first documentary and took 8 years to complete. She says making the film was a "life raft, emotionally" for her as news production isn't always that positive. She was inspired by the work of political scientist and author Robert Putnam, whose earlier work, "Bowling Alone" went viral. Americans had stopped joining clubs and civic organizations. Even the number of dinner parties and picnics had declined. His research showed that those "joining" activities directly correlated to how our Democracy is doing.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle have been supportive of Rebecca's documentary and understand the implications for a healthy nation. After living in NYC for decades, Rebecca has recently moved back to the Washington D.C. area to be closer to family. She notes, "The irony of the internet is someone might know what is happening in a neighborhood in China, but not what's happening on their very own street. And when someone tells me they watched my film and they are now joining a club, I feel really good about that!"

Rebecca's 2nd (or 3rd) Act Advice:
  • "Community happens when you do what you love with others. The bar doesn't have to be high to get going-- start a cycling group, form a movie night, create a cookbook club."
  • "Start with a group and then do the hard work of showing up every week. The gains come from doing that."
  • "Live the life you want to live in the future right now, and see where that leads you!"

Patrick Mulvaney Interview: It Really Is A Wonderful Life!

Diana Landau | June 29, 2021

In the movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey learns that his family business, Bailey Bros. Building and Loan, is so much more than a business. It's about the bonds they created to hold the community together. Patrick Mulvaney, award-winning chef, leader of the Farm-to Fork movement in Northern California and a local hero for his non-profit programs, was inspired by this sentiment and named his restaurant Mulvaney’s B&L. Patrick and his wife Bobbin have a successful restaurant business--- and have taken it to a whole new level of community service.

Although Patrick calls his restaurant a “shanty Irish joint” it is elevated dining using the freshest ingredients. Patrick and Bobbin believe the world can be a better place through their restaurant. They have cultivated relationships with local farmers, developed programs like Great Plates to feed hungry people in need and during the pandemic they were a vital part of a region-wide program, Family Meal Sacramento, making meals for over 100,000 families. California Governor Gavin Newsom observed the program and pledged to take it statewide during the pandemic.

Patrick’s grandparents on both sides immigrated to the U.S from Ireland. He grew up in New York with a lawyer father and an English professor mother. Then he found his true calling by working in kitchens and the rest is history! He had the opportunity to apprentice with a chef in Ireland. “I was fired 6 times in 9 months!” he says.

Patrick worked at Rockaway Beach in Queens for a time, and it was there he learned the powerful connectivity between a restaurant and the community.  “It’s a place to help the community become stronger, to become engaged, and it’s also a pathway to making your voice heard to decision makers.” Patrick then worked his way up the ladder at Metropolis in NYC under Leslie Revsin. During grad school at UC Davis, he saw a 12-month growing season and winemaking and knew he wanted to open his own restaurant in Sacramento, which he did in 2006.

“It gets back to what I learned in Ireland—where does your food come from? Do you know the farmers? Sacramento felt like home.” Now he is one of the lead innovators of the Farm-to-Fork movement, bringing farmers and chefs together in a big way. “It’s given something to Sacramento that the people can be proud of.”

Patrick and Bobbin also started the I Got Your Back Project, a mental health program and education for restaurant employees, after there were several suicides in the local restaurant community. “Restaurant work can be fast-paced, stressful and nocturnal. It requires thick skin and talent, not a college degree.” The program is now helping people every day.

What’s next? Patrick is still doing what he loves to do, wishing maybe he had a little more quiet time to cook. But he’s also taking the time to think about and reflect on what he wants to accomplish in his third act, whether it’s more involvement in advocacy, mental health, food insecurity or all three. We know he will keep making the world a better place!

Patrick’s (Un) Retirement Wisdom for Second Acts:

“Keep your eyes open and be enthusiastic in whatever it is you're doing, knowing that it might not be a direct path to doing (exactly) what you want to do. But know the experience will eventually help you in some way. When you meet someone, you never know what it is they can teach you, or how they might lift you up!”
